Insurance policy which requires the filling of an SR22 form is often called a SR22 insurance. There are two main reasons why you may be required to file a SR22 form. The first, and most common, is conviction for driving under the influence (DUI) of either alcohol or drugs. The second is for being involved in an accident while driving uninsured.In both cases your driving privilege will be suspended. As you probably know, California has one of the toughest car insurance laws. You will have to participate in a DUI program, but the worse part is that DUI conviction may even mean going to jail. One year without a license is the punishment for driving uninsured.

Maintain a proof of financial responsibility

The period, during which maintaining a proof of financial responsibility is required, is 3 years. You will have to pay a fine in order to get your license reinstated. On top of everything, during this period you will be put in the "high risk" drivers group.SR26 form will be submitted to the DMV if you cancel your insurance or your filling period expires. If you let your insurance lapse during these 3 years and SR26 form is submitted, your license will be suspended by the DMV.

Another important point is that California SR22 insurance is only valid for CA, because SR22 is state specific. Moving to another state will mean that you will need a different policy.
